Designer Behind President Zelensky’s White House Outfit Defends the Choice

President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and “Saturday Night Live” comedian James Austin Johnson all weighed in on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s all-black attire for his White House office visit, but what does the Ukrainian designer who created his ensemble think? Reached in Bucha, Ukraine, on Sunday, Elvira Gasanova said she never imagined one of her designs would become a geopolitical issue. “Of course, I never imagined this. I have just tried to be a designer who makes special dresses or suits,” she said. Zelensky turned up at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue wearing a three-button knitted long-sleeve polo shirt from Gasanova’s menswear label Damirli, as well as pants from the collection. She had made a special version for Zelensky with the emblem of a tryzub, a shield with a trident that is the coat of arms that Ukraine adopted in February 1991. But the dressed-down look has been a constant for Zelensky as a sign of solidarity to members of the Ukrainian military forces. Namely, that Zelensky said, “I will wear costume after this war will finish. Maybe something like yours. Maybe something better, I don’t know. Maybe something cheaper.” Estimating that 99 percent of Zelensky’s wardrobe is comprised of her designs, Gasanova added that Zelensky has not worn a suit since the Russian invasion three years ago, as a sign of solidarity and respect to Ukrainian solders. “It is a symbol of the unbreakable spirit of a nation standing up for its freedom,” she said. It is widely believed in Ukraine today that a president should not wear a suit during a time of war, she added. Gasanova also praised Zelensky for showing photos to Trump and Vance of Ukrainian soldiers who have been taken as prisoners by Russian forces. “Maybe he was trying to get some empathy from the U.S. government,” she said. “In my mind, our president has really shown his heroic mind. It really is hard for others to understand all that we have seen. I’m really proud of him, because everybody [outside of Ukraine] just sees the war on TV or on social media. But we’re living this war. We don’t just speak about it. That’s why only our Ukrainian president can speak about it,” Gasanova said. Sales of the knitted Damirli polo shirt that Zelensky wore picked up this weekend, Gasanova said. “Now a lot of people have been buying the shirt, which retails for 215 euros. Today we had a lot of orders from America. Maybe they want something that a Ukrainian president wore for a historical moment,” she said. The designer has dressed Gigi Hadid, Rita Ora, Kim Kardashian and Ukraine’s first lady. Having had to relocate her production at one point during the war and had her family’s home severely damaged by military strikes, she said, “Right now we are living in the moment every day. We want to understand what’s going on and what will be tomorrow. Of course, all of us would like the war to stop. But like our president said, we need to stop with some guarantees and the understanding this will not happen again. That’s why we’re just living our lives, helping our army with donations, supporting our president and just trying to make for a better life,” she said.
